innovationWHEN The Patch Primary School asked its students to come up with an environmental education wish list, having a range of animals to interact with and learn from was right up there.

“They were second after access to water,” full-time environmental education teacher Michelle Rayner tells Australian Teacher Magazine. “The students wanted some responsibility and they wanted to get up close [with the animals].”

Media camp is right on the mark

totcENCOURAGING students to enter their work in competitions to expose them to the realities of industry is a huge focus for media studies teacher Kellie Markwell.

“I try to expose the kids as much as possible to real life experiences in the industry so that they’re making things for assessment but also for a wider audience,” the Cape Naturaliste College teacher says.

Principal Peter Jakimowiez arrived at the school, on the outer fringes of Perth, in 2010 at a time when enrolments had fallen from 100 to 37 — his response was to start a renewal program.
