INT: Video games lead to deeper literacy understanding

techeyeSTUDYING video games in the classroom can give youngsters a deeper understanding of concepts central to literacy learning, according to a UK academic.

Professor Andrew Burn, from the University of London’s Institute of Education, told an audience at the University of Sydney there are no obvious negative effects to using them in schools.

Tech in SchoolsBUILDING an electric-powered go-kart that travels at speeds of 40 kilometres per hour seemed like quite a daunting challenge for Year 8 students when they were first assigned the task.

But as they began to break down the requirements, they discovered they were able to achieve a lot more than they first realised. At Prince Alfred College in Adelaide, they run a unique learning program called eduKart for their Year 8 boys, where each class spends a week at the eduKart workshop and in groups of three, the boys design, build and construct their vehicles.
